Montverde Academy, which is averaging 95 points per game in its 4-0 boys basketball start, has two home games this week — including a Thursday night national-TV game against Washington, D.C., area longtime powerhouse DeMatha Catholic (3-1) of Hyattsville, Md.
First the Eagles face state-ranked Tampa Catholic (3-0) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. The Crusaders have 6-foot-9 senior Johni Broome averaging 22.3 points and 13.0 rebounds.
The Thursday TV game (ESPNU) showcases a Montverde team that is ranked No. 1 in the nation by MaxPreps against No. 6 DeMatha. The Stags returned all five starters from a 32-5 Maryland Private School championship season.
Montverde’s key players have played many high-profile games and don’t seem to be concerned about the potential distractions of a national-TV game.
“It’s just basketball. We’re not really going to worry about anything that’s going on outside the court,” Eagles standout Cade Cunningham said.
DeMatha lost 75-67 to Sunrise Christian of Kansas on Sunday in a National High School Hoopfest game at home.
Seminole stays perfect: Undefeated Seminole won the Rotary Tip-Off Classic boys basketball tournament for the first time with a 70-58 victory against Daytona Beach Mainland on Saturday night.
“We just gave it our all,” said ‘Noles senior Amarie Perkins, who along with senior teammates O’Shae Baker and LaDarron Cleveland made the all-tournament team with stellar play on both ends of the floor. “We played as a team.”
Mainland guard Jordan Sears scored a game-high 26 points and was named tournament MVP.
Seminole is 4-0 going into a Wednesday night home game against Oviedo.
In the third-place game, Class 2A top-ranked Orlando Christian Prep (3-1) won 52-36 against host Winter Park (1-3). The Warriors played without two starters: senior Eric Butler, who came down with pneumonia on Thursday, and Ven-Allen Lubin, who sustained an ankle injury in a semifinal loss against Mainland.
OCP is home against unbeaten Melbourne (5-0) on Tuesday night.
Apopka topped Edgewater in the third-place game.
Oak Ridge, West Oaks score wins: Oak Ridge has just one senior and played only underclassmen but shook off a slow start to stay unbeaten with a 50-44 win against Ocoee on Saturday night in a matchup of Class 7A state-ranked teams at the Breast Cancer Awareness Basketball Classic.
The host Pioneers, ranked No. 2 by SourceHoops.com, were spurred by big plays from juniors Michael James, Rodrick Henry and Jalen Smith to build a 48-31 lead with 3:38 to go.
Ocoee, preseason No. 6 in 7A, dropped to 1-3 but showed some grit as it fought back to get to within four with just under two minutes to go.
“Their a helluva team but we showed some guts,” Ocoee coach John “Sarge” Siers said. “We didn’t roll over. We got a lot better today. I’m really proud of our effort.”
West Oaks Academy (8-2) rallied from 15 points down to beat Schoolhouse Prep of Miami 66-63 and give fifth-year coach Kenny Gillion his 100th victory at the school.
The Flame, who play outside the FHSAA, got double-digit scoring from all five starters.
Schoolhouse (1-1) is regarded by many as the favorite to win the FHSAA Class 2A state championship.
