The beautiful Greek island of Amorgos had recently become an online trend, but not because of its rugged natural beauty and private beaches, but because of its name. On the Internet it is known as the “25th island of Greece.”
Cycladic island searches are over, and it has nothing to do with booking a summer vacation or a new wave of interest in the Greek islands.
No, Amorgos has become a meme because of its links to an amazingly popular video game.
Grecian Delight supports Greece
After noticing Amorgos references everywhere, online experts have linked search with the full meme on Twitter where users are encouraging each other to search for “25th island in Greece.”
In the list of Greek islands in size, Amorgos is ranked 25th. A meme is a game based on the name “Amorgos,” which users think is similar to the name of the popular game “Among Us.”
Amorgos is trending because it sounds like “Among Us”
Although released in 2018, “Among Us” took the world by storm last spring, when those who were locked up alone and trapped inside looking for new games and activities to cure their boredom, and are still popular to this day.
The game involves a group of astronauts traveling around a rocket ship performing low-level tasks. There is, however, a fraud among the crew, who are determined to break the ship’s safety and kill the ship’s crew.
Every time a player dies, the whole team, which may be filled with strangers from all over the world, gather to discuss who they believe this cheater is, and then vote for them.
The cheater should try to deceive the whole team, by flying under the radar or blaming another player.
This continues until the fraudster kills all the other employees or is found and voted out of the ship.
The widespread popularity of the game has prompted social media users to see clues in it in their daily lives, whether it be names that remind them of their name, or situations that remember the symbolic numbers of team members.
The 25th island of Greece
Amorgos became a major tourist attraction in the late 1980’s when the island was behind the film “The Big Blue.”
The film, which became one of France’s most successful commercial films when it was released in 1988, is about a fictional drama played in a friendly drama and a sports contest between two of the world’s leading modern freelancers.
More than three decades after “The Big Blue,” Amorgos in 2020 was once again the focal point of the new international movement. German director / author Nana Neul’s length film “Töchter” (Daughters), based on Lucy Fricke’s best-selling novel, was the basis for the film. This was one of the first international integrations to resume after the country’s first national ban in Greece.
Tourism is slowly growing, although local features of the island are restricting the number of tourist attractions. It is accessible only by boat. Three main tourist destinations are located in Katapola, Aegiali and Chora.
Chora, the capital, is located in the interior of Amorgos, at an altitude of 350 feet (1,148 feet) near the center of the island. It is a fortified town, with white Cycladic houses, narrow streets, and churches. Chora surrounds the castle, built in the 13th century.
