His service was later extended to international locations, including the Falkland Islands and RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus. However, his RAF career came to an end in February 2006 when he was medically discharged due to injuries, including shoulder, neck, and spinal injuries, emphasizing the physical demands and risks related to military service.
With his passion for sports, Darren also explored sitting volleyball after he encountered physical injuries in his RAF career. Joining the UK Help for Heroes Team for sitting volleyball during the 2017 DoD Warrior Games in Chicago without prior experience in the sport, he quickly demonstrated his natural athleticism and dedication. Young’s sports journey continued as he represented Team GB at the Invictus Games in 2018, showcasing his progression in the sport. He also trained with both the National Development GB Squad and the Full Great Britain Squad as he gained a good grip on the game. His involvement with Team Help for Heroes in the Sitting Volleyball National League earned him a victory during the 2019/20 season, and in 2022, he achieved international recognition as part of the Sitting Volleyball Great Britain team, winning the Copenhagen Sit Cup and securing a second-place finish in the Bronze Nations League – Men.
