In general, cleaning a wall before painting is important. It can either be a quick job or a major effort depending on the condition of the wall itself. Cleaning a wall is way more than just simple washing if you want to make sure that the job is done right. This is consistently practiced by New casa painters and their services.

What Should you do to Properly Clean a Wall?

Step 1

Get rid of any peeling or chipped paint using a putty knife. If the paint easily comes off without a lot of effort, go ahead and remove, but remember not to force any paint from the wall that doesn’t need to be removed. Sand down bumps and other rough surfaces of paint to blend in with those areas where the paint has been removed.

Step 2

Remove any plaster that has become loose. Use spackle to fill in cracks, gaps, and holes. You can either use a putty knife or any large blade to apply the spackle. Sand the spackled area to make it smooth. Use a lint-free cloth to clean the dust and debris that was produced by the sanding process.

Step 3

Use a duster or dust mop to wipe out the areas where spider webs might have formed. This is an effective method to clean away dirt and dust that could get beneath the paint. Ensure that you clean the corners from top to bottom and edges where the ceiling and wall meet.

Step 4

Have a bucket filled with a mixture of warm water and mild detergent soap or trisodium phosphate (TSP). Place newspapers or used magazines on the floor up next to the wall. Dip the sponge into the bucket of soapy water and start cleaning from the bottom of the wall all through the way up. This is the best way to avoid water from running down the wall. When it streaks over soiled areas, it will be more difficult to remove the marks left by dripping water.

Step 5

Rinse with clean water and then pat it dry with a towel. Let it dry naturally by air for a few minutes and check each section to make sure that it completely dried off. And there you go you can now start painting.

Does it seem like a lot of things need to be done even before you can actually start painting? Well, cleaning is necessary for the walls that you can find in the bathroom, kitchen, and sink. If you have kids or pets at home, cleaning your wall might be a prerequisite before doing the task. Walls that are excessively dirty, oily, or greasy may need more effort, stronger detergent, and repetitive cleaning.

Ceiling and low impact rooms like bedrooms may not need scrubbing. Just make sure there are no visible marks of crayons or ink as they can still show up even when painted. Above all, the most important thing is you can clearly see and touch that the walls are relatively neat and clean for painting.
