She was born in Southfield, a suburb of Detroit, Michigan to a family of lawyers where her father Elliot used to work as a labour arbitrator, died in 2012 and her mother used to work as a lawyer too, died in 2020 and raised her as Jewish on June 23, 1972. Her parents got divorced when she was 23 and didn’t speak to each other for more than 12 years.

During her Cranbrook Kingswood school time, she got a minor role to participate in T.S. Elliot’s Murder in the Cathedral in 1990 where she was involved with the production team but she used to consider it as a failure and moved on. That was the first time she had said in various interviews that she thought of becoming an actress full of confidence. An agent spotted her when she was attending an acting class in 1993 in New York and immediately signed her by just looking at her face and the small rehearsal that she was doing at that time.

She got her very first job in advertising, a TV ad for the theatre of Virginia after getting rejected in more than 75 auditions. She got her first breakthrough role in the coming-of-age drama movie Cruel Intentions which became a sleeper hit but got mixed reviews from the critics. She got married to writer-producer Ahmet Zappa in 2004 and purchased a 1920s-era design home in Los Angeles for 1.35 million dollars and began their married life and got divorced two years later in 2006 citing personal reasons.
She then dated actors Jason Schwartzman and David Lyons back in 2008 and 2010 respectively and Mikey Day, co-star of Kath and Kim. After that, she dated Jason Bleick, a fashion designer in late 2010 and their son Arthur Saint Bleick was born only that July.
