No matter how advanced our computer technology becomes, problems still persist and the need for computer repair services inevitably remains. As systems change, the precise nature of these issues also shifts. In the modern area, then, what are some of the most common computer problems that people are facing? Some of these you may well have experienced yourself.
Problem 1: Dead on Arrival
If and when you press your computer’s power button to start it up and nothing happens, then you certainly know that something somewhere is wrong. It sounds completely obvious and you may think yourself beyond this kind of mistake, but do take a moment to check that the computer is plugged in if it’s a desktop. If it’s a laptop, plug it into a power source and see if that helps get it started up.
You’d be amazed at the number of people who encounter such issues, thinking their computer is actually dead when in reality there’s a simple power issue. A circuit breaker might have tripped, or a plug extension cord has blown a fuse or is otherwise faulty…the list goes on. If it’s not a power issue, a computer that simply won’t start might have corrupted firmware or a broken hard drive, both of which will need professional repair.
Problem 2: Freezing
Freezing is a different issue to a computer simply lagging (see below). Regular freezes for longer periods of time — especially when booted up in Safe Mode — are indicative of a more serious hardware problem such as your hard drive becoming corrupted, or your CPU overheating. Your computer freezing up once in a blue moon isn’t really anything to worry about: it happens. If it’s freezing up multiple times in a single session, however, you have a more damaging issue to deal with.
Problem 3: Lagging; Running Slow
Lagging and slow running of your computer is one of the more frustrating but sadly common issues that computers face, especially Windows systems. Lagging can indicate numerous problems, but the most likely causes are things that you can usually deal with without any professional help.
Try any of the following things when experiencing excessive lagging, and if the problem persists, then it might be time to summon a professional. First, check the amount of free disk space on your hard drive. If you’re running low, this can cause lag to happen. Clear out unused data, old system update files etc., and free up more space to allow the computer to run normally. You can also try defragmenting the hard drive, uninstalling unused programs, and shutting down background programs in the task manager.
Problem 4: Overheating
Computers come with fan units built into them to help keep them cooler as they’re used. If your computer gets dust built up in it, however, that dust can block the fans and cause the CPU to become too hot. Alternatively, your system can overheat when running too many programs, or running programs like high-resolution games that are very intense and use a huge amount of CPU capacity all at once. Keeping your computer clean and dust-free, as well as not operating programs beyond its capabilities will prevent overheating.
Problem 5: Internet Speed and Connectivity
In the connected information age, our Internet speed and connectivity is another common source of problem when it comes to our daily use of computers. Most Internet and connection issues are easily solved by doing things like restarting the router, restarting the computer, disconnecting and reconnecting, forgetting a network and reinstalling it, and so on. If you live alone but are experiencing slow Internet, login to your service account and check that others (perhaps your neighbours) haven’t managed to login without your permission. If they have, kick them off and change your passwords.
