Although you can still purchase newspapers at street stands and select stores, many newspapers have gone 100% digital and are no longer found in print form. While your first instinct may be to go to your computer to read the news, there are hundreds of newspapers apps that you can use on your mobile device, so you can read the latest news anywhere you go.
While I used to read the news on my computer as part of my daily routine, lately I haven’t had the time, since I am always on the go. As I was looking for news apps I could download on my phone, a friend of mine sent me a link to a list of supposedly the best newspaper apps. I checked out the list and was pleasantly surprised by the selection.
I downloaded some of the apps that caught my attention and selected the top 3 that I liked the most. I’ll provide a short review, with some of the pros and cons I found for each one, so you can easily find one that is right for you.
SmartNews – Multiple news sources
One of my favorite news apps is SmartNews. The main reason I like it is that it brings together articles from the most trustworthy news sources in one place. From TIME and Reuters articles to Huffington Post, CBS and NBC news stories, and more, you will find the best and most relevant news stories in just a few taps. I also like how you can access local news by selecting any city directly from a map. No need to search for a city by name, although you do have that option too! I also really like that you can customize notifications to receive breaking news alerts on topics you are interested in. Another neat feature I found is that you can download articles to your phone so you can read them anytime, anywhere.
I am a big fan of SmartNews’ offline reading feature, as I can read the news even when I don’t have a steady internet connection. However, I recommend that you remember to delete articles once you’ve read them as they do take up space on your phone.
BBC News – Customized news feed
Another news app I really like is BBC News. I particularly like the variety of news feed options as you can select from traditional news categories like politics, tech, and science, or you can select from specific topics you are interested in like cars, recipes, space exploration, and more. Another plus I found is that you can download news stories to your phone so you can read articles offline! I also like that you can increase or decrease the font size to your liking, so you can read articles comfortably on any device.
The only thing to keep in mind is that you will see video ads occasionally. While I personally try to stay clear from apps with ads, I found them to be short and non-intrusive. And, more importantly, I found that the vast amount of news content more than makes up for the short video ads.
CNN Breaking US & World News – Watch the news
Last but not least, my third pick is CNN Breaking US & World News. One of the reasons I really like it is that you can watch your favorite CNN Live TV coverage right on your phone. By entering your cable subscription information, you can enjoy unlimited video news coverage on your mobile device, anywhere you are. I also like that you can access anything from breaking news to in-depth stories, opinion eds and photo galleries on current worldwide topics.
The only drawback I’ve found is that the Live TV feature is not available outside the United States. However, if you are overseas you can still access a wealth of news information including video segments on top news stories. And, with so many articles and video clips to choose from, you will easily stay up-to-date on the latest news.
Conclusion
So, these are my top 3 favorite newspaper apps. If you are looking for an easy way to read the news, then you’ve arrived at the right place. Whether you want to read the news on your phone or tablet, these will enable you to read the news anywhere you go. And, with up-to-date daily news and breaking news at your fingertips, you will always be in-the-know!
