What is the Rathaus Vienna?

Vienna City Council, Vienna City Hall, is the headquarters of Vienna’s municipal authority, situated in the inner-city neighbourhood, on Rathausplatz. The newly constructed Office of the Mayor of Vienna and the chambers of the City Council and the Vienna Landtag, built between 1872 and 1883 according to the designs created by Friedrich Schmidt in neo-Gothic architecture.

In short, the town hall is the Vienna City Hall, where the municipality and the mayor legislate and control everything from urban planning and transit to education and culture. There is an elegant council chamber, festival chamber, the Coat of Arms Hall, a sweeping staircase and a romantic arcaded courtyard in the huge neo-Gothic house.

The large square in front of the town hall at the Rathausplatz draws locals and tourists every year to a dozen large gatherings and festivals.

   1. Get your tickets:

A free guided tour of the City Hall is available every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 1.00 pm. Non-German speakers can use audio guides in English, French, Spanish and Italian when on tour in German. Participants usually commend the guided tours and prefer to use the romantic paternoster elevator of the city hall before or after the time. They are open and secure to the public.

Even if the excursions are free, a ticket is required to enter. We suggest you get your access in the morning to stop being empty and to ensure that there are tours.

   2. Public events that may be best for your trip:

If you’re fortunate, the holiday coincides for example with the Concordia Ball or the New Year’s Eve Gala, one of the lavish activities in Rathaus Vienna. In summer, classical concerts take place in the arcaded courtyard.     4. How to go to Rathaus Vienna?

Take either the tram 1, 71 or the tram D, along Ringstrasse before the “Rathausplatz / Burgtheater” station to enter the Vienna City Hall. Taking the metro U2 to ‘Rathaus,’ which is right behind the house.
