How a Toxic Workplace Can Affect Your Health

You can’t love your job all the time. People mostly dislike work when they are rushing to meet deadlines, their boss has pulled them up for something they did wrong, or it’s another rainy Monday morning. However, if you have a toxic working environment and you hate being there all the time then it can really start to affect your health in the following ways.

Stress

Stress is good in small doses because it can increase performance but if you are feeling under undue pressure all the time then it is damaging to your health. It affects your ability to perform your job well and it can lead to physical health problems such as migraines and fatigue.

Self Confidence

A toxic work environment can have an enormous impact on your self-confidence. You have a dreadful day at work, perhaps you have a boss or colleaguewho is bullying or intimidating you. When you are caught up in the moment you are so busy worrying that you don’t know what to do. One thing you can’t do is leave the problem at the door at 5 pm and walk out of the office full of confidence. It can affect you so badly that you don’t even want to leave the house on weekends to buy a pint of milk. You can get more info on how to deal with workplace bullying, but action will need to be taken if you don’t want to lose your sense of self.

Sleep Issues

You have worked in a toxic environment all day, worried about it all evening, and trying to get any sleep is an impossibility. You lay awake for most of the night again worrying about how you are going to cope in the office the next day. This leads to health problems relating to insomnia such as short-term memory loss and a reduced reaction time. This can be extremely dangerous if you have to drive or operate heavy machinery and could put your health at risk.

Depression

It’s not surprising that the thought of spending a lot of your working hours in a toxic environment makes you feel depressed. This is a common side effect in people that hate their jobs. It can cause you to become unhappy, emotional, and lethargic. In some cases, this can even lead to suicide.

Compromised Immune System

You may think that hating your job and coming down with every virus or bug around are totally separate things, but they are not. Your immune system can be compromised when you feel stressed or depressed and it can be caused by insomnia. If you want to avoid those cold and flu bugs you keep getting, then it might be time to switch your job rather than your flu remedy.

Life is too short to spend it in a toxic work environment, and if it is affecting your health, you might want to reconsider your position or find a way of improving your work/life balance so that you can improve your health and wellbeing too.
