About Zig-Zag Papers

Zig-Zags are popular European rolling papers. Often sold in compact paper books, these are some of the most recognizable rolling papers in the United States. Primarily, Zig-Zag papers are used to make hand-rolled cigarettes, joints, and other similar smoking applications.

Wood Pulp and Flax Paper Composition

Zig-Zag papers are made using a combination of wood pulp and flax. Consequently, these rolling papers burn smoothly and evenly. Comparatively, Zig-Zag papers are lightweight and leave minimal ash behind.

Furthermore, these papers use a natural Arabic gum line to help your hand-rolled smokes stick together and hold their form.

Types of Zig-Zag Papers

Zig-Zag papers come in a range of sizes and styles. The most popular Zig-Zag papers are the single-wide “Whites”. Next, there are the second most popular orange packs of 1.25 sized Zig-Zag papers. Then, Zig-Zags come available in King Size, 1.25 Rolling Cones, King Size Cones, 1.5 Inch Wides, and 1.25 Inch Thins.

In addition to this, Zig-Zag Rolling Papers are available in a range of styles. These include Organic Hemp, Kutcorners Slow-Burning, Ultra-Thin, and Unbleached. Zig-Zag papers also come in a hemp wrap variant. Zig-Zag Hemp Wrap flavors include Blazin Blue, Original, Purple Chill, and Tropic Trip.

The History and Legacy of Zig-Zag Papers

The Zig-Zag company was founded in 1855 by two brothers named Maurice and Jacques Braunstein. Originally based in Paris, this company focused on paper production.

In 1894, the Zig-Zag company invented a process called interleaving. This allowed them to create rolling papers that used an alternating packing process for convenience and compact portability.

By 1919, the Zig-Zag company had opened a new mill in Thonon Les Bains. Later during World War II, the company shifted all of its production to the Thonon mill. In the year 2000, Zig-Zag became a part of Republic Technologies. Today, Zig-Zag is still going strong!

The Man of the Hour

So who’s that guy on the front of Zig-Zag rolling paper packs? Well, that would be none other than Captain Zig-Zag, otherwise known as Le Zouave. This individual represents the fictional portrayal of a legendary Zouave soldier who popularised cigarettes in Europe.

As the legend goes, during a battle in the 1830s, a Zouave soldier was about to smoke tobacco from his clay pipe. Unfortunately, a musket ball came flying at him and shattered his pipe into pieces.

Undeterred by this, The Zouave ripped off a piece of paper from a nearby musket cartridge bag. From there, he proceeded to roll his pipe tobacco up into a convenient and portable cigarette.

In the 1960s, The Zouave was used in many Zig-Zag marketing campaigns. Although he looks a whole lot like a hipster, he’s in fact an important character in hand-rolled cigarette smoking history!
