As a writer, it’s tough to always think of the best narrative to please your readers. Behind those compelling and riveting sentences and paragraphs are sleepless nights, anxiety, perturbation, and the all too familiar – writer’s block.

It takes a dedicated level of commitment to finish a book. A writer can’t simply start on a whim and end whenever he’s not up to it anymore. The amount of time wasted will not only haunt a writer like you for the rest of your life (a bit exaggerated) but will also question where you are with your writing career.

And that’s when problems get worse. In rare cases, depression even seems to take over. However, you have the only power to make everything better. Why? Because you’re the only one who can improve your craft through effective techniques and a resilient mindset.

That said, here are five fiction writing tips to help you finish that book early for publishing companies!

  1. Write down the entire story structure.

Sure, talented writers can write as they go. But having a framework for your teen fiction book means you’ll never go off on a tangent. With a written-down structure, you’ll have something to guide you along the way. Inspiration comes and goes, and sometimes you get sidetracked. So whenever you get lost, you can always pertain to the original plan and start again when you’re ready.

  1. Get the reader engaged early on.

Some of the most disappointing books I’ve read are those with weak introductions in the first few pages. I eagerly flip through the pages to find the main elements of the book to no avail and end up not getting into the book at all. Teen fiction books are challenging to write compared to non-fiction books. It’s a whole new world of imagination, and you have to always get readers engaged on every page – especially on the first few pages! Think of a strong introduction that acquaints the readers with the main characters, setting, style, theme, and conflict. That way, they can relate to the characters early on which piques their interest even more.

  1. Paint a picture through words.

People sometimes read fiction because they’re tired of the mundane things they have to deal with in the real world. Use sharp and straightforward dialogue. It’s always good to paint your readers a picture on every scene, not in an excessively dull way but intensely and engagingly.

  1. Work in a comfortable environment.

While this may seem subjective for every writer, it’s always better to write with no distractions around. It takes 23 minutes and 15 seconds for someone to refocus after a distraction. Isolate yourself a couple of hours per day to increase your productivity, and that includes turning your mobile phone off!

  1. Combat writer’s block.

Writer’s block is an inevitable stage of the fiction-writing process. And that’s okay. The great writers didn’t achieve greatness overnight. They had to endure through demotivation and writer’s block. Go for a walk, listen to music, play with your dog, exercise, change the environment, or drink beer if you have to. Then go back at it when you’re ready.
