Ball valves play a core role within a plumbing network, preventing the flow of water with a quick twist. These quarter-turn valves allow you to stop and restart the water flow by easily operating a handle from the outside. Some of the most common ball valves you can find in use are made from PVC, but some of them are manufactured with metals including brass and stainless steel.

Ball valve comes in handy when you’re living through a leak, allowing you to stop the flow of water very quickly. A leaky ball valve won’t do its job properly, which can be an annoying pain-in-the-arse. Fortunately, you can have a go at D.I.Y repairs to deal with the problem, or just spend some money to buy a new valve.

How does a ball valve work?

A ball valve is a quarter-turn valve where a ball sits in the passageway of the valve, thus where it got its name. When any liquids or gases flow through the passageway, the ball has a hole where the valve opens and, then closes.

When the ball’s placement positions the hole running at the same angle as the passageway, liquids and gases can flow through it. On the contrary, when the hole is perpendicular to the passageway, liquids can’t flow through and the valve is, therefore, closed. However, you can control the valve from outside via the handle, turning it to open and close the valve.

Why a Ball Valve might be leaking internally

Ball valves might be leaking for various reasons. For example, if you can’t properly close the valve due to high amounts of debris, it can cause enormous amounts of damage to the valve.

Reasons ball valves are leaking:

  • Improper transportation or support damage to the main valve can lead to the ball valve leaking insidiously.
  • If the ball valve is too moist before leaving the site, the sealing surface may corrode with rust and leak.
  • If the safeguard is not positioned correctly, rainwater and debris, which can cause leaking.
  • If no grease is injected into the valve seat during its installation, pollution can enter the valve seat causing leaking.
  • If the valve is not fully open when installed and welded, this will damage the ball. If there is weld splatter in the switch, that too will damage the valve seat, and this will create internal leaking.
  • If the limit isn’t accurate while it is installed or the stem’s drive is misaligned, the valve leak.
