If you are a GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test Engineering) aspirant who is aiming at Ph.D., then there is some good news for you this 2019. Punjab University (PU) has relaxed the criteria for application to its Ph.D. course (in Engineering) through GATE.

In 2019-2020 academic sessions, GATE qualifying candidates would be seen eligible for Ph.D. admissions at PU. Earlier PU has fixed the score whereby candidates scoring below the notified score (even if qualifying GATE) were seen ineligible for admission to the Ph.D. courses.

With this notification, PU has opened the doors for candidates who have qualified GATE 2016, GATE 2017, GATE 2018 (as GATE score is valid for three years) to take admissions in the Ph.D. courses.

The move came after long pending demand from candidates who were citing this fixation of a score for admission as criteria stringent than even IITs and NITs. Now, those candidates who are preparing for GATE 2019 exam can apply for PU directly (if they qualify GATE).

With GATE 2019 just a little over a month ago the news is sure to boost the morale of aspirants. Meanwhile, the admit cards for GATE 2019 would be released this month on the official website of IIT Madras (the official GATE 2019 Exam conducting authority).

Move to benefit students

The officials from Punjab University (PU) said that the move would especially benefit the students of University Institute of Engineering Technology and University Institute (UIET) of Chemical Engineering and Technology (UICET) apart from other students who are willing to take admissions in Ph.D. at PU. Both UICET and UIET are part of the Punjab University.

The fixing of 350 as the minimum qualifying in GATE for Ph.D. admissions in PU was making good candidates remain ineligible so, the move was awaited form the side of official authorities. However, PU made it clear that lowering of eligibility standards in terms of GATE score wouldn’t mean that below average students would be granted admissions.

Interview for Ph.D. admissions

To better asses’ aspirants for grant of admission in Ph.D. programs (in engineering) officials at PU have given a hint that the University might adopt interview as a stage for selecting candidates.

Assessing candidates through multiple rounds for the grant of admission in Ph.D. is a common practice. By going for an interview as the method of selection of candidates for Ph.D. courses PU would ensure that only deserving candidates are inducted.
