Outdoor umbrellas are the perfect accessory for the homeowner that likes to spend time outside but doesn’t want to end up with a sunburn. Patio umbrellas come in a variety of shapes, colors, and sizes. It’s easy to find one that matches your overall decor and style.

In 2020 alone, Etsy reported an over 300% increase in searches for outdoor umbrellas. There’s also a large variety in price points, so you don’t have to feel like it’s a major investment.

Here’s your outdoor umbrella guide for picking the right type and size for your home.

Umbrella Size

What size patio umbrellas are best for your particular setup? If you buy one too small, it won’t protect your guests or your furniture from sun damage. Too big an umbrella can throw off the entire outdoor arrangement.

Try to purchase an umbrella that extends over your tables by at least 2 feet on all sides. For example, a table that’s 3 feet across needs a small patio umbrella of 6 feet in diameter.

You should also make sure to get an umbrella with a thick enough pole so that it’s stable. This is especially important if you’re in an area with heavy wind or rain.

Types of Patio Umbrellas

Not all patio umbrellas are made the same. Some, like the Tucci Cantilevered Umbrellas, have a specific style and can cover larger areas. Others, such as Frankford Beach, are designed against high-speed winds and better fit a beach aesthetic.

A patio umbrella with a stand is a perfect option for placing next to your lounge chairs. You can also purchase a giant umbrella for covering an entire seating arrangement. These are usually Cantilever umbrellas, which offer an increased range of motion and can be tilted.

Table umbrellas are a good choice if you want something more minimal but functional. They work especially well for dining tables.

Umbrella Material

Homeowners want their patio umbrellas to not only look good for a long time but also stand up against the weather. Part of that depends on its fabric materials

Olefin has UV resistance, dries quickly, and has been in circulation since the 1960s. It’s a strong and well-priced option.

Acrylic fabric comes in soft colors and is also UV resistant. It’s not as resistant to wear as olefin, though.

Polyester fabric is the most affordable option, but it isn’t as lightfast or UV resistant as the alternatives. You may also need to treat it with a water repellent.

Regardless of your budget, treating your umbrellas regularly with water repellent and UV inhibitors will help them stand the test of time.
